Beware the Queen of Hearts. She’ll have your head.

Marissa Meyer; the author of the Lunar Chronicles series back again with the untold story of the Queen of Hearts. If you haven’t already; check out my book review for the first book in that series; Cinder
The story of young Catherine, or Cath as she’s fondly called by her family. The daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of Turtle Rock, with nothing more than the hopes of opening her own bakery one day with her best friend. But when you’re going to be the next Queen of Hearts, following your heart is the biggest decision you will ever make.
Cath, along with her best friend (and family servant) have dreamt of opening a bakery for so long. Cath and Mary Ann are the perfect business partners and are so close to making there dream a reality. Or as real as it could be for a Marquess daughter.
“We can’t choose where our affections lie.” – Mary Ann, Heartless.
Catherine was an amazing sweet and strong headed character; it’s hard for me to even believe that she grew to become the Queen of Hearts. All I have to say about that is; fear the girl with the broken heart, it’s dangerous. After reading this book; you’ll definitely have a better appreciation for someone else’s point of view and how sometimes people are only a product of their circumstance.
Her parents never supported her dream, because they thought they knew what was in her heart, what would make her happy and what would be the best thing for her. If only they knew…
For the daughter of a Marquess; working for a living instead of getting married to someone of reasonable status and inherit your family’s estate doesn’t exactly bring honor to your family (if you’ve watched Mulan, you totally get this).
I loved how different desserts were incorporated into the story; as a person who loves to bake, this was something I kept me interested. This was very similar to To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The King of Hearts is definitely not charming, frankly; he’s hardly a good ruler in my book; he never wanted to face the reality that was in front of him. He preferred to hide it away and forget anything bad was every happening.
Jest fell for Catherine when he was never meant to, definitely a relationship that started out unexpectedly; which I don’t think we see in many books. At least now in this context.
I love Alice in Wonderland and getting this glimpse into the story is truly amazing and gives the story new depth. If you’re a fan of this Alice I would definitely recommend you read this book.
Till next time loves xoxo
