This book was one of the highest anticipated books of 2015. Red Queen is book one in a four book series written by Victoria Aveyard. This book definitely lives up to all the hype. From start to end.

“Anyone can betray anyone.” – Mare Barrow, Red Queen

Persons with red blood (Reds) are the regular people like Mare. They are poorest group of persons. Then; there are those who are born with silver blood (Silvers). These are persons often of “royal” bloodlines. There are Silvers that are lower than other’s but none ever lower then a Red.

Mare, lives in a Red community known as the Silts. Without having any actual skills other than stealing, it is her only way of making money to help support her family. Mare’s sister, Gisa is a gifted apprentice to a seamstress who makes the finest clothing. Any Red who isn’t an apprentice or has a job by eighteen is sent off to fight in the war, like Mare’s father and three older brothers.

Without a job or an apprenticeship, Mare fears being sent off to fight along side her brothers, but mostly she fears for the well-being of the family she would leave behind. Mare’s closest friend, Kilorn is going to be sent off to war after the fisherman he worked under dies. Mare tries to find another way out for him, (i.e. trying to smuggle him out of the country). She puts Gisa’s career as a seamstress on the line in order to get the money (which she later regrets). Guess it’s onto plan B, picking the pockets of drunk persons from a bar and anyone else in the crowd.

Mare tries to steal from a very unexpected character which ends up in her getting a job a the palace of King Tiberias Calore VI of Norta, his wife the Queen Elara, their son Prince Maven, the younger brother, and his older brother Prince Tiberias “Cal” Calore VII. Cal is also the son of the king’s first wife Queen Coriane. He is also evidently the one who got her the job. Everything escalates quickly when sudden falls on a electric fence during the Queenstrial.

She can control lightning a surprise to everyone. The Queen then makes a plan to hide her in plain sight, making her, Maven’s future bride. One of many lies the Queen devised to hide the truth. Mare was forced to leave her family and her life behind to become Mareena Titanos. With her newly found ability, Mare, joins the Scarlet Guard only to pull Maven in with her. Big Mistake.

During her time at the palace she not old bonded with her fiancé but also her future brother-in-law. The closer she gets with Maven the closer she gets to Cal. Her conflicting feelings for them get in her way of seeing the truth. She think’s she’s using Maven’s affection for her to help with the Rebellion but nothing is further from the truth. Like his mother he’s a snake in the grass.
